Kentuck Knob, also known as the Hagan House, was designed by Frank Lloyd Wright and built in the early 50’s.  Kentuck Knob overlooks the Youghiogheny River Gorge and is built entirely of tidewater red cypress and native fieldstone laid by local craftsmen.  An open floor plan based on a hexagonal grid and expanses of glass artfully integrate the outdoor and indoor spaces.  For more information visit their website at www.kentuckknob.com or call 724-329-1901.  Reservations are required.

Linn Run State Park has a varied topography and mixed hardwood and evergreen forest that make this park a scenic place for picnicking and hiking. Nature Preserve – Powdermill Nature Reserve is open year round and features unique environmental exhibits, nature trails and conservation education programs. Nature Preserve – Winnie Palmer Nature Reserve is located in Latrobe, about a half hour drive from Walnut Hill. This 50 acre wildlife sanctuary has a learning center and walking trails.  Call for seasonal Barn Environmental Learning Center hours 724-537-5284 or visit their website at www.wpnr.org.

Ohiopyle State Park is located at the southern reaches of the Laurel Ridge.   Ohiopyle State Park encompasses approximately 20,500 acres of rugged natural beauty and serves as the southern gateway to the Laurel Highlands. Passing through the heart of the park, the rushing waters of the Youghiogheny [yaw-ki-gay-nee] River Gorge are the centerpiece for Ohiopyle. Quecreek Mine Rescue Site is located at 151 Haupt Road, Somerset, Pa.,15501.  On July 24, 2002, 9 coal miners endured three days of solitude, shut off from the world above.  Their story is told here.  The 9 miners stayed strong for each other and never gave up on hope.
